Steven Shanks

 

Technical Trainer

Steven has had a distinguished 25-year career at sea, serving in the military and civilian offshore environment.

Since graduating in 1995 with a degree in Hydrography with Marine Navigation from the University of Plymouth, Steven has conducted a wide range of offshore hydrographic surveys.

He considers himself an underwater acoustic positioning specialist having worked as a Chief Navigator in the seismic oil and gas exploration industry from 2008 to 2020.

He has served on all manner of vessel both below and above the surface of the ocean. Steven was involved in towing the largest in-sea configuration ever towed by a single seismic vessel. With 14 streamers measuring 10.5km in length making it the largest man-made moving object on the planet.

Due to the extent of his experience Steven was awarded a Senior Lectureship with the University of Lincoln to teach Meteorology and Oceanography to Royal Naval Officers at Britania Royal Naval College. He is a qualified higher education teacher, and he joined the Sonardyne training team in 2024.
